Recipe Notes & Easy Substitutions:

One of the beauties of this chocolate dessert pizza recipe is its flexibility. Don’t be afraid to experiment and tailor it to your taste or dietary needs. Here are some helpful notes and substitution ideas:

  • Buckwheat Flour for the Crust: I personally prefer using light buckwheat flour for the pizza dough. This choice results in a lighter colored crust, which I find more appealing for a dessert pizza. However, if you enjoy the earthy, darker hue and robust flavor, feel free to use dark buckwheat flour. For an even more artisanal touch, you can either buy store-bought buckwheat flour, or for the freshest flavor, consider grinding your own homemade buckwheat flour from whole groats.
  • Chocolate Ganache Spread Options: To ensure this recipe remains truly dairy-free and vegan, I’ve opted for vegan dark chocolate (good quality dairy-free semi-sweet chocolate chips also work wonderfully) combined with dairy-free heavy cream. The result is a rich, silky ganache that’s indistinguishable from its dairy counterpart. If you don’t have lactose intolerance or specific dietary restrictions, you can certainly use regular dark chocolate and traditional heavy cream. For an even quicker preparation, a good quality dairy-free chocolate-hazelnut spread can be used as a convenient shortcut – just warm it slightly for easier spreading.
  • Berry Bliss: While fresh strawberries offer a classic and beautiful topping, don’t limit yourself! This dessert pizza is incredibly versatile. Feel free to use other types of your favorite fruits or a colorful mix of different berries. Raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, sliced kiwi, or even thinly sliced bananas could create equally stunning and delicious variations. Consider what’s in season for the freshest taste!
  • Hazelnut Harmony & Other Nut Choices: I find that the distinct, slightly sweet and earthy flavor of chopped unsalted hazelnuts perfectly complements the rich chocolate ganache. However, if you have other preferences or dietary needs, feel free to experiment with other types of unsalted nuts. Delicious alternatives include finely chopped almonds for a milder crunch, hearty walnuts, savory peanuts, vibrant green pistachios, or even creamy macadamia nuts. For a nut-free option, toasted pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds can provide a satisfying crunch.

How to Make Chocolate Dessert Pizza (Step by Step Guide)

Creating this delicious dessert pizza is simpler than you might think! Follow these easy steps for a perfect result every time.

1. Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan:

Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). While the oven heats up, position your oven rack in the middle for even baking. Next, line a large round pizza pan with parchment paper. This crucial step prevents the dough from sticking and ensures easy transfer of your finished pizza. If you don’t have parchment paper, a light greasing of the pan will also work.

2. Prepare the Homemade Gluten-Free Pizza Dough:

In a spacious mixing bowl, combine your pizza dough ingredients: the buckwheat flour, salt, and water. Stir these together thoroughly with a wooden spoon until all components are well integrated and you achieve a homogeneous, pliable dough. Gluten-free dough can sometimes be a bit sticky, so lightly flour your hands with gluten-free flour before you begin to knead. Gently knead the dough until it forms a smooth, round ball. Avoid over-kneading, as gluten-free dough doesn’t develop in the same way as traditional wheat dough.

3. Roll Out the Dough:

Once your dough is ready, divide it into two equal portions. On a clean, lightly gluten-free floured surface, or directly on your parchment-lined pizza pan, use a gluten-free floured rolling pin to roll each portion of dough out. Aim for a thickness of approximately ¼ inch (about 0.6 cm). You can roll it into a perfect circle, or feel free to embrace a more rustic, free-form shape – any shape you like will work beautifully for this dessert pizza!

4. Bake the Pizza Crusts:

Carefully transfer each rolled pizza crust onto the prepared pizza pan. Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 8 minutes. The goal is a crust that is lightly golden brown around the edges and crispy to the touch. After 8 minutes, gently check the crust. If it still feels a bit soft in the center, return it to the oven for an additional 5 minutes, or until it achieves a desirable crunchy texture and hardens slightly. It’s important to find that sweet spot between crispy and dry. (Note: Be mindful not to bake it for too long, as over-baking can cause the gluten-free crust to become overly dry and brittle.)

5. Prepare the Velvety Chocolate Ganache Spread:

While your pizza crusts are baking, you can simultaneously prepare the decadent chocolate ganache. Begin by finely chopping your dark chocolate into small, uniform pieces; this will help it melt smoothly and quickly. In a small, heavy-bottomed pot, gently heat the dairy-free cream over medium-low heat. Bring it to a near boil – you’ll know it’s ready when small bubbles start to form around the edges of the pot. Immediately remove the pot from the heat. Add all the chopped chocolate bits into the hot cream. Let it sit undisturbed for a minute to allow the chocolate to soften, then gently stir with a whisk until all the chocolate has melted and you achieve a perfectly smooth, glossy, and spreadable creamy chocolate mixture. This rich ganache is the heart of your dessert pizza!

6. Assemble Your Delicious Chocolate Dessert Pizzas:

Now for the fun part – assembly! Once your baked pizza crusts have cooled slightly (they don’t need to be completely cold, just cool enough to handle), retrieve your luscious chocolate ganache. Using a rubber spatula, gently and evenly spread half of the chocolate ganache mixture over each of the two pizza crusts, extending it almost to the edges. Next, arrange half of the freshly sliced strawberries over each pizza, distributing them artfully for both taste and visual appeal. Finally, sprinkle generously with the chopped hazelnuts, adding that wonderful crunch and nutty flavor. Serve and enjoy this stunning chocolate strawberry pizza immediately! The combination of warm, crisp crust, smooth ganache, fresh fruit, and crunchy nuts is truly irresistible when enjoyed fresh.

Dish by Dish Tips & Creative Tricks:

Elevate your chocolate dessert pizza experience with these handy tips and creative variations:

  • Speedy Gluten-Free Pizza Crust: While our homemade crust recipe is delightful, if time is of the essence or you prefer maximum convenience, don’t hesitate to use a store-bought gluten-free pizza crust. This significantly cuts down preparation time, allowing you to enjoy this amazing dessert in a flash! Alternatively, if you are not Celiac or gluten-intolerant, feel free to use a normal, traditional pizza crust instead for a different texture.
  • Effortless Chocolate Ganache Spread: For those days when you crave this dessert but want to minimize effort, a high-quality dairy-free chocolate-hazelnut spread can be a fantastic shortcut. Simply warm it gently in the microwave or a small saucepan for a minute or two until it’s easily spreadable, and you’ll have a quick, delicious base without making ganache from scratch.
  • Peanut Butter Lover’s Dream: If you’re a devoted peanut butter fan, here’s a delicious twist! Go ahead and swap the chocolate ganache for your favorite creamy or crunchy peanut butter. Spread it generously over the baked pizza crust, then top with sliced bananas, a drizzle of chocolate syrup (if desired), and a sprinkle of chopped peanuts for a truly indulgent treat. Almond butter or cashew butter also work beautifully.
  • Indulgent Ice Cream Pairing: For an extra layer of decadence, serve your warm gluten-free dessert pizza with a scoop of your favorite ice cream. Classic vanilla bean complements the chocolate and berries perfectly, but vegan chocolate, strawberry, or even a berry sorbet would be absolutely divine. The contrast of warm pizza and cold ice cream is simply irresistible.
  • Create an Easy S’mores Dessert Pizza: Dreaming of a campfire classic without the campfire? Transform this recipe into an easy S’mores dessert pizza! Simply omit the strawberries and hazelnuts. After spreading the chocolate ganache, generously scatter mini marshmallows over the chocolate. Place the pizza back in the oven for just a few minutes, or under the broiler (watch carefully!), until the marshmallows are delightfully golden brown and gooey. It’s a fantastic sleepover dessert that brings the joy of s’mores indoors!
  • Add a Citrusy Zest: For a bright, fresh flavor, finely grate a little orange or lemon zest over the finished pizza. The citrus notes will beautifully cut through the richness of the chocolate and enhance the sweetness of the strawberries.
  • A Hint of Coconut: Toasted coconut flakes make an excellent addition for extra texture and a tropical touch. Sprinkle them on top along with or instead of the hazelnuts.
  • Mini Dessert Pizzas for Parties: This recipe is fantastic for individual servings! Divide the dough into smaller portions before rolling them out into mini crusts. Bake, top, and serve adorable individual dessert pizzas, perfect for potlucks, kids’ parties, or an elegant dessert bar.

Frequently Asked Questions (Recipe FAQs):

Can I Store this Gluten-Free Dessert Pizza for Later?

While incredibly delicious, this chocolate strawberry pizza is truly at its peak when eaten immediately after assembly. The crust is at its crispiest, and the strawberries are at their freshest. Over time, the moisture from the fruit can soften the crust, and the overall texture changes. For the best culinary experience, I do not recommend storing it for later enjoyment. Make it and devour it fresh!

Can I Prepare the Pizza Dough in Advance?

Yes, absolutely! Preparing the pizza dough ahead of time is a great way to streamline your baking process. After preparing the dough as instructed, simply wrap it tightly in plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out, and store it in the refrigerator for a few hours. When you’re ready to bake, remove the dough from the fridge and allow it to come to room temperature for about 15-20 minutes before dividing it into two portions, rolling it out, and proceeding with baking.

Can I Make This Dessert Pizza Nut-Free?

Yes, you can easily make this recipe nut-free! Instead of chopped hazelnuts, consider using toasted pumpkin seeds (pepitas) or sunflower seeds. These seeds will provide a similar delightful crunch and a slightly earthy flavor that complements the chocolate and strawberries beautifully, ensuring everyone can enjoy this delicious treat.

What Other Fruits Can I Use on My Dessert Pizza?

While strawberries are a classic choice, feel free to get creative with your fruit toppings! Blueberries, raspberries, thinly sliced bananas, kiwi slices, or even segments of mandarins can add fantastic flavor and color. A mix of different berries can also create a vibrant and diverse flavor profile.

Description

This fun, easy and delicious chocolate dessert pizza makes a great alternative to the typical desserts options. A thin, crispy crust is spread with chocolate ganache and topped with fresh strawberries and chopped hazelnuts. Includes a homemade pizza dough recipe, but feel free to use store-bought pizza dough for convenience. Totally gluten-free, dairy-free and vegan too! Perfect for the holidays or any special occasion, such as Valentine’s, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year’s.

Ingredients

Units

Scale

For the Gluten-Free Pizza Dough:

  • 2 cups light buckwheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup filtered water, room temperature

For the Pizza Topping:

  • 1012 fresh strawberries, leaves removed and sliced into pieces
  • 3.5 oz vegan dark chocolate
  • 1/2 cup dairy-free heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup unsalted hazelnuts, chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Grease: Preheat the oven to 350F (175°C) and arrange the oven rack to the middle position. Line a large round pizza pan with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare Pizza Dough: In a large bowl, combine the pizza dough ingredients (buckwheat flour, salt, and water) and mix well with a wooden spoon until you get a homogeneous dough. Use gluten-free floured hands to gently knead until you get a soft, round ball.
  3. Roll Out Dough: Divide the dough into 2 equal portions. Using a gluten-free floured rolling pin, roll each portion of dough out to a ¼ inch-thick circle (or any shape you like) directly on the prepared pan or a floured surface.
  4. Bake Pizza Crusts: Place each rolled pizza crust onto the previously-greased pizza pan and bake for approximately 8 minutes until it is golden brown on the outside and crispy to the touch. If the pizza crust is still soft, place it back into the oven for an extra 5 minutes or until it becomes crunchy and hardens a bit. (Note: Be careful not to bake it too long, or the crust will dry out and become brittle).
  5. Prepare Chocolate Ganache Spread: While the crusts are baking, chop the dark chocolate into small pieces. In a small pot, gently heat the dairy-free cream and bring it to a near boil (remove the pot from the heat once the cream starts bubbling at the surface). Add the chopped chocolate bits to the hot cream in the pot and stir with a whisk until you get a smooth and easily spreadable creamy chocolate mixture.
  6. Assemble the Chocolate Dessert Pizza: Use a rubber spatula to gently spread half of the chocolate ganache mixture on each of the two baked pizza crusts. Top each pizza with half of the sliced fresh strawberries and sprinkle generously with the chopped hazelnuts. Serve and enjoy this chocolate strawberry pizza immediately for the best flavor and texture!

Notes

Gluten-Free Pizza Crust: If you prefer not to make your own homemade pizza crust, you may also use a good quality store-bought gluten-free pizza crust for convenience. Alternatively, if you are not Celiac or gluten-intolerant, feel free to use a normal pizza crust instead.

Buckwheat Flour: I prefer to use light buckwheat flour for a lighter colored crust, but feel free to use dark buckwheat flour if you prefer its earthier flavor and darker hue. You can either buy store-bought buckwheat flour, or grind your own homemade buckwheat flour for ultimate freshness.

Chocolate Ganache Spread: To keep this recipe dairy-free and vegan, I used vegan dark chocolate and dairy-free heavy cream. If you are not lactose-intolerant, feel free to use normal dark chocolate and heavy cream instead. For added convenience, you may also use a store-bought dairy-free chocolate hazelnut spread (warm it slightly before spreading).

Berries: Feel free to use other types of your favorite fresh fruits or a colorful mix of different types of berries (such as raspberries, blueberries, or sliced kiwi) instead of just strawberries.

Hazelnuts: I enjoy how the taste of chopped unsalted hazelnuts perfectly complements the chocolate ganache spread. However, feel free to use other types of unsalted nuts for variety (such as almonds, walnuts, peanuts, pistachios or even macadamia nuts). For a nut-free option, toasted pumpkin or sunflower seeds work well.

Eat Immediately: This chocolate dessert pizza is truly best eaten straight away after assembling to enjoy the optimal crispiness of the crust and freshness of the toppings. I do not recommend storing it for later as the crust may soften.
