Last weekend, seeking a delightful escape from the city bustle, my partner Juan and I embarked on an adventure to Annapolis, Maryland. Our journey began with a ride on the orange line metro towards New Carrollton. From there, a comfortable 30-minute shuttle ride on the 921, expertly driven by Raymond, brought us right to the heart of this charming city, dropping us off just outside the post office in what felt like a truly quintessential American town.

This proximity makes it an absolutely ideal destination for a spontaneous day trip or a leisurely weekend getaway for those staying in either D.C. or Baltimore, offering a perfect change of scenery without extensive travel.

We chose to visit Annapolis during the Columbus Day long weekend. With no plans for an out-of-station trip, it felt like the perfect opportunity to explore a local gem. Following enthusiastic recommendations from Juan’s colleagues, we seized the opportunity of a gloriously sunny Saturday afternoon. The forecast promised clear skies and crisp fall air, making it an irresistible invitation to swap the urban landscape for Annapolis’s unique blend of history, charm, and coastal beauty.

Exploring the Heart of Annapolis: Main Street and Maritime Wonders

As with many historic small towns, Annapolis captivates with its network of narrow, winding roads, adorned with picturesque, centuries-old buildings. The vibrant town center serves as the pulsing heart, where an array of charming shops, local boutiques, and inviting eateries create a lively atmosphere. These establishments are undoubtedly one of the town’s biggest draws, offering everything from nautical gear to artisanal crafts.

Our initial stroll took us along Main Street, the town’s bustling artery. Even for a long weekend, the street was exceptionally vibrant, teeming with a delightful mix of locals and tourists from nearby cities. The extra buzz was due to a special boat fair being held at the harbor, drawing even more visitors eager to experience Annapolis’s famous maritime spirit. The energy was palpable, with laughter and conversation filling the air, set against the backdrop of historic architecture.

The Allure of Annapolis Crab Cakes: A Culinary Quest

During our exploration, we couldn’t help but pass by the legendary Chick & Ruth’s Delly. Our shuttle driver, Raymond, had sung high praises of their renowned crab cakes, describing them as an absolute must-try. Unfortunately, the sheer number of people and our schedule didn’t allow for a stop on this particular visit. Missing out on such a local delicacy was a slight disappointment, but it immediately provided a compelling reason for our inevitable return to Annapolis: those famous crab cakes!

Navigating the Bustling Boat Show

Intrigued by the crowds and the promise of nautical wonders, we decided to brave the busy boat show at the harbor. Stepping inside was like entering a maritime wonderland. We were treated to an overwhelming array of yachts of all sizes, sleek powerboats, elegant sailboats, and an almost endless display of boating accessories. Seriously, if you could attach it to a boat, it was likely on exhibition. From compact sailboat kitchen burners designed for life at sea to luxurious onboard pools and high-tech navigation systems, it was a genuine heaven for any sailing enthusiast. However, despite the undeniable allure, neither Juan nor I were in the market for a sailboat (nor did our wallets permit such a grand acquisition!). After a while, the dizzying amount of people, the constant movement, and the sheer volume of dazzling displays started to make us feel a little overwhelmed. So, with a shared glance, we discreetly made our way towards the exit, exhaling a collective sigh of relief once we were back in the refreshing open air. Phew, that was an experience!

Beyond Main Street: Hidden Gems and Collegiate Charms

Leaving the energetic hustle of Main Street behind, we ventured deeper into the town center, allowing ourselves to stroll aimlessly, soaking in the atmosphere. It was truly a sunny, gorgeous fall afternoon, and the golden light made every building, every tree, and every cobblestone look incredibly pretty. The vibrant fall foliage added splashes of red and gold to the historic brickwork, enhancing Annapolis’s inherent beauty. All that walking had certainly worked up an appetite. Our stomachs rumbling, we made our way to the inviting Galway Bay Irish Pub. This choice was particularly excellent as they offered a variety of delicious gluten-free options, which was perfect for Juan. I indulged in an incredibly filling and authentic Irish platter – a delightful combination of savory sausages, rich black and white pudding, perfectly cooked eggs, and crispy fries. It was the kind of hearty meal that truly satisfies and re-energizes.

After our satisfying lunch, we continued our exploration along the same street. We soon stumbled upon a charming little bookstore that exuded an antique, rustic feel. Its shelves were packed with intriguing titles, and its interior felt wonderfully cozy. The real surprise, however, was its gorgeous backyard patio – a serene oasis perfect for leisurely browsing or enjoying a quiet moment with a new read. We spent some time admiring the collection and soaking in the peaceful ambiance before continuing our journey to uncover more of Annapolis’s delights.

A Journey Back in Time: The Serenity of St. John’s College

As we wandered, we passed by a park that immediately caught our attention with its serene and calming ambiance. We saw two boys engrossed in a game of cricket, their laughter echoing softly through the trees. Intrigued, we entered the grounds, and it wasn’t long before we realized we had serendipitously stumbled upon the original campus of St. John’s College. This historic institution, known for its unique “Great Books” curriculum, offered a peaceful contrast to the earlier hustle and bustle of the town’s main attractions.

Being surrounded by so much lush greenery and the distinguished red-brick campus buildings was truly beautiful. The air felt different here, steeped in academia and history. It was captivating to be momentarily transported back to our own student days – a feeling that was particularly intoxicating given that both Juan and I had recently celebrated our thirtieth birthdays this year. The nostalgia was strong, and the thought of returning to that vibrant period of learning was incredibly appealing.

Juan, in particular, couldn’t stop expressing how much he yearned to pursue a Master’s degree someday soon and experience the joys and challenges of being a student once more. The peaceful academic environment, combined with the crisp autumn air and the historical backdrop, ignited a spark of aspiration that lingered throughout our visit.

Reflections on a Perfect Day Trip to Annapolis

Having thoroughly explored most of the St. John’s College campus grounds, we eventually returned to reality, setting aside our pleasant daydreams of student life. We began our leisurely walk back towards Main Street, where our trusty driver, Raymond, was scheduled to pick us up at 7 p.m. The sun was beginning to dip, casting long shadows and painting the sky with warm hues, adding a magical touch to the end of our day.

Our day trip to Annapolis was nothing short of wonderful. The city proved to be an excellent destination for a short visit, offering a perfect blend of history, natural beauty, and vibrant local culture. From its charming streets and historic buildings to the impressive Naval Academy and the lively maritime scene, Annapolis truly has something for everyone. And while we savored every moment, there’s still one culinary quest left unfulfilled: those legendary crab cakes.
