Embracing Intentional Living in a Hectic World

Just yesterday, glancing at my calendar and seeing “June 1st” gave me pause. We’re nearly halfway through the year, a moment that always sparks reflection. In recent months, a particular word has consistently resonated with me: “intentional.” It’s become a recurring theme, a guiding principle that I instinctively know requires my full attention. For this season of my life, intentionality is undoubtedly my anchor.

During my recent visit home to Singapore, intentional living was a frequent topic of conversation with my brother, Ronald, and several close friends. These discussions prompted deeper contemplation on what it truly means to live intentionally and why such a purposeful approach to life is so profoundly important.

What Does “Intentional” Really Mean?

The word “intentional” inherently suggests deliberation, planning, and design. From these definitions, it becomes clear that intentionality is the antithesis of carelessness or thoughtlessness. It demands conscious effort and thoughtful consideration. Living intentionally means making choices for specific reasons, rather than simply letting circumstances dictate our path or leaving things to chance. It means acting with purpose, pursuing objectives, and aligning our actions with our deepest values.

Clarity and Purpose: The Fruits of Intentionality

I firmly believe that the moment we commit to living intentionally, our priorities come into sharp focus, much like stars glittering in a clear night sky. The internal pressure to say “yes” to every request without understanding our motivations (perhaps a fear of missing out, or an eagerness to please) begins to fade. We are no longer compelled to entertain options that do not genuinely align with our time, effort, or energy. The tendency to blindly follow trends or jump on bandwagons, simply “because,” dissolves.

Instead, living intentionally empowers us to ask what truly matters to us, moving beyond merely reacting to what feels urgent. This shift encourages us to invest in long-term growth and well-being, rather than constantly “fighting fires.” It prompts us to critically examine the motivations behind our decisions, whether it’s cultivating a healthy habit like exercise or letting go of detrimental ones. Every action, every step, becomes imbued with purpose and reason. This is, in essence, how life should be lived: with definition, direction, and unwavering intention.

Living Our Days, Shaping Our Lives

I find myself increasingly aware of the profound truth in Annie Dillard’s famous quote: “How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.” If our lives are indeed the cumulative sum of the events and choices that unfold day by day, then the way we choose to engage with our daily routines holds immense significance. To live a life well-lived, a life without regret, it becomes imperative to make our decisions carefully and to plan our actions with clear purpose and unwavering definition. It calls us to live intentionally, with every waking moment contributing meaningfully to the larger tapestry of our existence.

Connecting Intentionality to Your Plate: The Power of Mindful Meals

Description

Fragrant garlic butter shrimp sautéed to golden brown perfection, on a bed of deliciously vibrant and low carb yellow squash noodles. This quick and healthy meal is perfect for a light dinner, all prepared in under 30 minutes!

Ingredients

Units

Scale

  • 20 jumbo shrimp, peeled with tails left on
  • 3 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/4 cup of butter
  • 2 large yellow squash, julienned into thin noodles with this julienne peeler
  • 1/2 cup flat-leaf parsley, chopped
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 a lemon, for the juice

Instructions

  1. Melt butter in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. When butter is melted, add in minced garlic and stir quickly for a few seconds until fragrant. Immediately place shrimp in a single layer in the skillet, ensuring they are evenly spread out for optimal cooking.
  3. Allow shrimp to cook undisturbed for 1-2 minutes until the flesh is no longer translucent and the bottom side turns golden brown. Flip the shrimp over and cook for another 1-2 minutes until the other side is also golden brown and cooked through. Remove shrimp from the skillet and reserve.
  4. Using a julienne peeler (as seen in the images and highly recommended for perfect noodles), julienne the yellow squash into thin, noodle-like strands.
  5. Place the yellow squash noodles into the same skillet. Stir well and sauté for a few minutes until they are softened but still retain a slight bite, ensuring they don’t become overly wilted. Add salt and freshly ground pepper to taste.
  6. Return the garlic butter shrimp to the pan with the squash noodles, and toss in the chopped parsley. Mix everything well to combine the flavors.
  7. Before serving, squeeze fresh lemon juice generously over the dish. Serve immediately and enjoy your quick, flavorful, and intentional meal!
