Love’s Summer Finale

Embracing the Golden Glow: Cherishing Summer’s Lasting Memories

But today, when the sun is everywhere, and everything solid is nothing but its own shadow, I know that the real things in life, the things I remember, the things I turn over in my hands, are not houses, bank accounts, prizes or promotions.

What I remember is love – all love – love of this dirt road, this sunrise, a day by the river, the stranger I met in a cafe.

– Jeanette Winterson, Lighthousekeeping.

Jeanette Winterson’s profound words resonate deeply, serving as a gentle reminder that life’s true treasures are not found in material wealth or accolades, but in the intangible threads of connection and experience. As the vibrant energy of summer begins to wane, leaving behind a subtle melancholy, this sentiment rings truer than ever. It’s in these moments of transition that we truly appreciate the simple yet powerful beauty of a sun-drenched day, the warmth of human interaction, and the quiet joy found in nature’s embrace.

Like many, I find myself in a delightful dilemma when it comes to the non-winter seasons. I confess, I’m a little greedy, unable to definitively crown one as my absolute favorite. Autumn, with its breathtaking palette of red auburns and orange-yellows, has always held a special place in my heart. The scattered leaves on pavements create a mosaic of farewell, while the hazy skies lend an ethereal quality, making each day feel like a page torn from a dream. Then there is Spring, an undeniable harbinger of new beginnings and fresh life, its subtle hints of rebirth tremendously alluring and hopeful. Yet, despite the charm of autumn and the promise of spring, it is during Summer that I truly feel most alive.

When my thoughts drift to Summer, my mind conjures images of the warm, golden sunlight. It feels like a piece of yellow silk, soft and light, gently gliding down my face, its touch a comforting caress. I envision the bright green blades of grass, swaying rhythmically in the gentle breeze, playfully flirting with a passing rainbow-colored butterfly whose wings flutter with the delicate grace of ripples on a serene lake. The air itself seems to pulse with life – a palpable lightness that permeates everything. I notice the carefree spirit of people on vacation, their laughter echoing through parks and streets. The sweet, heavy scent of blooming flowers hangs in the heat, mingling with the ever-present humidity, creating an intoxicating aroma unique to this season of abundance.

This past year has unfolded with a bewildering pace, and just like so many other things, Summer has raced by before I could truly grasp it and hold onto its fleeting magic a little longer. It seems almost incredulous to look back and realize it has only been twelve months, a mere 365 days, packed with an astonishing array of happenings, both joyous and challenging. The sheer volume of experiences, both good and bad, makes the passage of time feel both incredibly slow and impossibly fast. However, instead of dwelling on what has passed, I find a greater sense of peace in focusing on the present moment, resolved to savor these final, golden days of Summer.

THE LAST DAYS OF SUMMER

On what was the second-last weekend before Summer officially bid its farewell, Juan and I awoke to a magnificent, sunshine-filled Sunday. Sunbeams spilled generously in every direction, painting the bright blue sky with streaks of light, promising a perfect day. The air was crisp yet warm, carrying the faint scent of blossoming trees and freshly cut grass. It was the kind of morning that pulls you out of bed with an irresistible urge to embrace the day.

Without a moment’s hesitation, our minds converged on the same delightful plan: a trip to our favorite brunch spot, Oui Oui. This charming French-themed cafe, renowned for its incredibly reasonable prices and inviting atmosphere, is more than just a place to eat; it’s an experience. The moment you step inside, you’re transported to a quaint Parisian eatery, with the gentle clinking of porcelain, the hushed murmur of conversations, and the irresistible aroma of freshly baked pastries and coffee.

Of course, a visit to Oui Oui would simply not be complete without indulging in our beloved “Huevos Completos” set. This iconic brunch menu is a symphony of flavors and textures, designed to satisfy every craving. It features perfectly fluffy scrambled eggs, cooked to a delicate tenderness, alongside crispy-edged, vinegared potato wedges that offer a tangy counterpoint. A generous strip of pan-fried bacon adds a smoky, savory crunch, perfectly complemented by a vibrant medley of fresh salad greens. Completing this delightful ensemble are slices of crisp, white toast, ideal for soaking up every last bit. And to wash it all down, a large jug of their signature homemade foamy mint lemonade – a refreshingly zesty and subtly sweet concoction that brightens the entire meal.

We ate with gusto, savoring each bite, till we were utterly content – almost ready to explode, yet grinning wider with every mouthful. The feeling of satisfaction was profound, a testament to the simple joy of a perfect meal shared in good company. Our bellies full and our spirits lifted, we knew exactly what came next. It was only natural to take a leisurely stroll to the nearby Plaza Las Heras, to soak up the glorious afternoon sun and breathe in the sweet, earthy aroma of nature that permeates the urban oasis.

The walk itself was invigorating, a gentle transition from the cozy cafe to the expansive park. As we entered Plaza Las Heras, the sounds of the city melted away, replaced by the rustle of leaves, the chirping of birds, and the distant laughter of children. The sun, still high in the sky, dappled through the lush canopy of trees, creating intricate patterns of light and shadow on the grass. We found a comfortable spot, letting the warmth envelop us, feeling the gentle breeze on our skin. It was a moment of pure, unadulterated peace, a perfect ending to our brunch.

And of course, there was the incomparable pastime of people-watching. A park on a sunny Sunday afternoon is a vibrant tableau of humanity. There were families picnicking, children chasing pigeons, couples strolling hand-in-hand, and individuals engrossed in books or simply lost in thought. Each face told a silent story, each interaction a fleeting glimpse into another life. We watched as friends laughed over shared secrets, an elderly couple sat quietly holding hands, and a group of teenagers practiced skateboarding. It’s a humbling and heartwarming experience, reminding you of the rich tapestry of life unfolding all around. This simple act of observation, of being present in a shared space, underscored the beauty of collective human experience.

Life, in its simplest form, is truly beautiful, and in these final, lingering days of summer, I feel overwhelmingly blessed. It’s in these moments – a shared meal, a sun-drenched walk, the quiet contemplation of others’ lives – that the essence of happiness reveals itself. These are the real treasures, the vivid memories that will endure long after the season changes.

Because ultimately, what I remember is love – all love. Not just the grand, sweeping gestures, but the quiet, everyday manifestations of it. The love shared with a companion over a meal, the love for the world around us in its simplest, most natural state.

These are the moments that weave together the rich tapestry of a life well-lived, the indelible imprints of love that truly define our existence.
