Embrace Your Purpose: Finding Freedom and Fulfillment in Freelance Life (Plus a Vibrant Peach & Arugula Salad Recipe!)
Every individual holds a unique melody within them, a specific tune meant to be sung for the world. What’s yours? This fundamental question has resonated deeply with me over the past few weeks, solidifying my conviction that we are all created with a distinct purpose, endowed with special gifts and talents that are meant to be nurtured and shared.
My own journey to uncover this purpose has recently led me down an exciting and profoundly fulfilling path. Since making the pivotal decision to work for myself – fully dedicating my time and energy to the creative endeavors of freelance writing, recipe development, and food photography – I’ve experienced a sense of liberation I never thought possible. It’s a feeling akin to being “free as a bird,” unburdened by the constraints of a traditional corporate structure and empowered to chase my creative passions.
Now, don’t misunderstand me; this newfound freedom doesn’t translate into leisurely days spent lounging around, only working when the mood strikes (though, I must admit, answering client emails and crafting recipes in my pajamas is indeed one of the delightful perks of being your own boss!). On the contrary, since realizing that this creative path is truly what I’m meant to do, I’ve been working harder and with more dedication than ever before. My days are filled with writing projects, developing innovative recipes early in the morning – regardless of whether it’s a weekday or a public holiday – and almost every single day involves the intricate art of styling and photographing food. This intense schedule, surprisingly, doesn’t feel like a chore; it feels like living.
I finally grasp the true meaning of loving what you do so immensely that you never feel the need for a break from it. While the physical demands of working so much can be tiring, the remarkable truth is that I’ve never felt as refreshed, energized, and deeply inspired as I do right now. It’s like a constant breath of crisp, fresh air to be so passionately in love with my work. I wake up each morning with a tangible spring in my step, eager to embrace the day and genuinely excited to discover what new culinary creations or compelling stories I will bring to life.
(Psst… I’ve also finally created a professional online portfolio! So if you’re keen on working with me, or if you’d simply like to check out my work, head on over to felicialim.com.)
Looking back, 2016 began with a move to Washington DC, and even as we packed our bags to return to Buenos Aires, I felt an undeniable stirring deep within my heart – a premonition that this year was destined to be truly AWESOME. Then came the unexpected news: my company closed down, and my colleagues and I were laid off. What might seem like scary news to many was, in fact, the most wonderful news I could have received. It was a clear sign, a powerful push towards the path I was meant to forge on my own, a catalyst for embracing a life of freelance freedom and creative fulfillment.
Just two months later, as we step into March and witness summer gracefully transitioning to autumn, my certainty that this will be the best year yet has only grown stronger. On a personal, physical, emotional, and especially a career-wise level, I know that truly amazing things are waiting to unfold. There’s a perpetual smile on my face and an incredible lightness in my entire being, a testament to the profound joy of living in alignment with one’s true calling. This journey into freelance writing and food photography has transformed my perspective entirely.
For the first time in years, I genuinely feel fulfilled in my work. This deep happiness I derive from pursuing what I am so crazy passionate about serves as a powerful confirmation that I’ve made the right choice and am unequivocally on the right route, even if it is the often challenging “path less traveled.” It requires courage to step away from the security of traditional employment, but the reward of living authentically is immeasurable.
I recently had a transformative conversation with my friend Jane about the concepts of scarcity versus abundance mindsets. I firmly believe it was precisely this shift in perspective – moving from a mindset of scarcity to one of unwavering abundance – that granted me the courage and the capability to take a significant leap of faith. This allowed me to fully dedicate my time and energy to the work I love, without being consumed by constant worry over immediate monetary compensation. It’s a powerful lesson in trusting the process and believing in one’s inherent value.
Instead of living in a state of anxiety and operating from a place of lack, the decision to actively start living and genuinely believing that there is more than enough for everyone was a crucial and life-altering change. This powerful mindset shift has had a profound impact across all aspects of my existence. I suddenly feel open, full, and overflowing with gratitude and possibility – in my relationships, my creativity, and my overall outlook on life.
A dear friend from church once shared with me that she had seen a vision of me in her prayers – a vision of my life being filled with such immense abundance that I would marvel at it. I truly feel like I am living that very version of myself right now. It’s a testament to the boundless generosity and goodness of God, who is indeed amazingly abundant in all things. This spiritual foundation further reinforces my belief in the path I’ve chosen and the joy it brings.
